Sumiton Library program enjoys large number of participants

The Sumiton Library Reading Program had the highest registered student total in two years, according to library officials.

Sumiton librarian Susan Black says ;ibrary personnel are very pleased with how the program turned out this year with a total of 85 registered children for the program who represented six different area schools.

Black says the summer reading program has been serving children in Sumiton and surrounding cities for more than 15 years with the main focus for the program being to encourage children to read. Black gpes on to add that the library staff loves being able to provide this program for the children of the community as well as to give them other educational activities to occupy them during the summer.”

This summer's reading program included a visit from the McWane Science Center, during which children were able to see and interact with hands-on experiments, paint art work with local graphic designer Natalie Ballenger and sing and perform for Music Day. The program ended with Fun Water Day at the Sumiton City Park.

Black says the program would not have been able to reach the children that it has reached without the help of the community and volunteers throughout the summer and that the library would like to thank Mayor Petey Ellis and the city council members as well as others in the community who help sponsor the reading program.

For more information about the Sumiton Library or programs they offer, contact librarian Susan Black at 387-7451.

Area animal clinic offering discount on spay/neutering

To help reduce the overpopulation of animals in Jefferson County and surrounding areas and to help relieve the burden on animal shelters, a non-profit group, Spay/Neuter Alabama, has cut prices on procedures it performs. The 501(c)(3) non-profit organization performs discounted spaying or neutering procedures out of a double wide mobile home located in Irondale and, during the past 13 months since the clinic opened, it has operated on 1,100 cats, dogs and several bunnies.

Jo Chamblee, Alabama Spay/Neuter Transport Director, says that since opening, a dent has been made in the number of animals running loose in Jefferson County and Chamblee hopes more residents in Walker County will take advantage of this discounted service. Chamblee says the group is a non-profit organization that will be working with rescues, shelters and pet owners to help reduce the numbers of strays running the streets.

The cost of neutering a cat is $38 and spaying is $53. The cost of neutering a dog is $58 and spaying is $68.

The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Alabama Spay/Neuter offers a free transport service to help relieve the stress of those residents who may not be able to take their pets to Irondale.

Chamblee said Jasper resident Beverly Webb is the point person for Alabama Spay/Neuter Clinic in Walker County. Webb monitors the phone line and makes appointments for those residents interested in taking part in the program. Webb will pick up your cat or dog at 7:15 a.m. on either the second or fourth Monday of each month. Afterwards she will drive them down to the clinic to be spayed or neutered.Your pets will have to stay the night, but will be returned on the following morning.

Anyone interested in taking part in the program may contact Webb at 387-7387.
