Hubert Dale Hagen
Hubert Dale Hagen was born November 23, 1922 to the late Robert Hagen and Edith
Shine in Bosworth, Missouri. He was raised in Kansas City, Missouri by his
grandmother, the late Anna L. Hagen, and his aunts, the late Mrs. Robert Fizzell,
and the late Emma Hagen. He served in World War II as a naval aviator, flying
submarine reconnaissance along the East Coast in airships and Catalina aircraft.
Following World War II, he earned his associate degree in engineering from
Kansas City Junior College and began working for Sinclair Coal Company of
Kansas. While developing coal mines in Western Kentucky, he met Gwendel Carden
of Beaver Dam and they wed in 1947. He had a long and successful career with
Sinclair Coal Company, which acquired Peabody Coal Company in the late 1940s and
assumed the Peabody name. He eventually achieved the office of Vice President
for Exploration and Development, and had major influence on Peabody’s emergence
as the largest coal producer in the world. In the early 1970s, he joined Peabody
colleagues in forming a new company, Arch Mineral, which has subsequently become
a major energy producer. He departed Arch in the late 1970s to become Senior
Vice President of the Drummond Corporation in Alabama and was responsible for
expanding that company’s expansion to international markets.
He was an Eagle Scout and remained an active supporter of the Boy Scouts America
until his death. He was a Mason, a member of the Navy League, an avid collector
of antique duck decoys, and a skilled wood-worker. He was an accomplished
private pilot until health issues precluded flying, and authorized several
mining engineering textbook chapters.
He is survived by his wife, Gwendel “Corky” Hagen of Jasper; a son, Dr. Michael
Hagen of Lexington, Ky.; a daughter, Marsha Hagen of Jasper; and three
granddaughters, Laura Dean of Chicago, Ill., Sandra Hagen of Greenville, S.C.,
