Flora Cain Sherer, 93, of Jasper
Flora Cain Sherer, 93, of Jasper, went to be with the Lord
Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at Walker Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, July 10, at Samaria Baptist Church
with burial in Walker Memory Gardens. Phillip Drake will officiate.
Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper will direct.
Visitation will be from 10 until 11 a.m. today at the church.
Mrs. Sherer was born on Sept. 7, 1915, and her life was a beautiful example of a
Godly woman who was a great “prayer warrior.” Mrs. Sherer was a Sunday School
teacher for over 50 years and a faithful church member. She retired from Auburn
University Extension Service in 1981.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John H. Sherer; parents, Grady
and Pearl Cain; sister, Clara Sherer; and brothers, Dewey and Barney Cain.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Sherer of Jasper; brother, Charles Cain
of Jasper; and several nieces, nephews, friends and her loving church family.

Pensacola, Fla.
Hugh Don “Buz” Phillips, 68, of Pensacola, Fla., died Wednesday,
July 8, 2009. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at
Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with burial at the adjoining cemetery.
Pastor Chip Barbas will officiate. Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at
the funeral home. Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home will direct.
He was a native of Walker County and resided in Pensacola for the past 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 25 years, Linda Phillips;
parents, Cecil and Mary Phillips; and sister, Susie Phillips.
He is survived by his loving companion, Susan Powell; sons, Jeff Phillips
(Christy) and Mike Phillips (Lisa); daughters, Lynn Hayden and Janet Presley;
brothers, Dennis and Royce Phillips; sister, Carolyn Phillips (Bob); five
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Covenant
Hospice, Inc. or the American Cancer Society.

Johnie A. Banks, 89, of Thach
Johnie A. Banks, 89, of Thach, died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at his
residence after suffering years with Alzheimer’s disease. Funeral services will
be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at Collins-Burke Funeral Home with burial at
Bennett Cemetery. Vance Hutton will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 to 11
a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Collins-Burke Funeral Home will direct.
He served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne in France during World War II.
He was a member of Double Springs Church of Christ. He worked for many years as
a coal miner in Walker and Jefferson counties and retired from Peabody Coal
Company in 1977 where he was a heavy equipment operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John O. and Mary Banks; brothers,
Anthum, Mannie, Violus, Bartley, William, Carlie, Ira, Troy and Willie; and
sisters, Rosie, Mickey, Belle and Sally.
He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Lizzie Lou Banks; children,
Kenneth Ray Banks (Jeanette), Harvey Deron Banks (Machelle), Shelya Vanita
Latham (Danny), Cynthia Renee Pope (Ricky); grandchildren, Kevin Banks (Ramona),
Kent Banks, Kimberly Banks Wilcox (Jimmy), Jason Banks (Susan), John Banks, Amy
Latham, Candace Pope Kizer (Ashley) and Shanna Pope Robbins (Chris); and eight
great-grandchildren.

Grammer, 51, of Pelham
Thomas Marshall Grammer, 51, of Pelham, formerly
of Carbon Hill, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at his residence
with his loving family by his side. A memorial service will be
held Saturday, July 11, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Carbon Hill
Church of God, with the Rev. Troy Tannihill officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmur and Rose Grammer;
and a brother, Jimmy Brown.
He is survived by his sisters, Karen Lowery and her husband,
Doug, and Johnina Black and her husband, Keith; brother, Michael
Grammer and his wife, Sandra, and Randy Grammer and his wife,
Alice; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and dear
loving and caring friends; special friends, Dwayne Kennedy,
April and Jeremy Herron, Bruce Naramore and their families.
