What is WQJJ?

WQJJ is the call sign of what is Jasper's most unique and ONLY licensed FM radio station.

WQJJ is an LPFM broadcast station. LPFM stands for Low Power FM radio. It is a classification created by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) whereby, if a group in a suitable community meets a strict set of standards they are then issued a permit to construct a 100 watt broadcast facility which can then be used to broadcast to that community. The licensed group is then required to provide at least 12 hours per day of an alternative form of broadcasting (much of which should be educational and/or local in nature) that will stand apart from the formats already existing on the airways of the region.

WQJJ is the call sign of what is Jasper's most unique and ONLY licensed FM radio station. During 2000, North Alabama Public Service Broadcaster’s applied for one of these rare licenses. In 2004, after many months of extensive investigation, that application was granted and, during the following months, WQJJ was constructed.

In a word, the fact that our application was approved was nothing less than a miracle. It's too long a story to go into here, but our approval was gained before requirement standards were tightened, which ultimately eliminated almost 90 percent of all the permits that were initially to be granted. With that in mind, we feel it is a great honor and an even greater responsibility to see to it that this rare and valuable license is not wasted.

Our programming is unique when compared to the existing radio stations available in our area (and around the entire country for that matter). It features many local residents (artists and otherwise) along with programming that addresses local issues and goals. It is an open forum for the voice of the people of Jasper and the surrounding areas. It is also a source of music, news and special features that do not mimic that which is already so abundant on commercial radio all over the dial. In some ways it is radio by the people and for the people rather than for commercial or corporate profit. In another sense though, it is radio for those who really do like radio.
