Comments The recent pictures of the neglected AM brought to mind something similar: I took care of an AM station several years, and several states away. It had on OLD four tower DA, fed with openwire feeder. Amazingly, the monitor points were in, even though there were several signs of neglect. The towers were aluminum, and were put up sometime in the mid 40s. They were quite famous for missing cross members, falling hardware etc. One morning I get a call from the General manager. He says "get here quick" and then slammed the phone down. So, I go to the station, and find most of the staff standing in the parking lot, pointing at one of the towers, which was about 20 feet from the offices and studios. Its a nice cool, WINDLESS day. as I get out of my car, the GM runs up and says..."LISTEN!" OK I thought, and about then I hear CLANK, SQUEAK, RUMBLE from up on that tower. I look at it, and its just dancing big time! Guy wires are flying up and down etc! (keep in mind there is not even a breeze.) A few seconds later the tower makes a bunch of noise again, and the guy wires take off. I am thinking to myself: this is not good. I am glad to see everyone out of the building! This goes on for 20 minutes. Each time the tower makes a noise, you can see paint and other material coming off at about the 300 ft level. It finally stopped. I repeated to the GM my long standing recommendation that the towers be replaced. No dice. A few years later I heard that a tornado went thru this array. It knocked down a NEW tower that supported an FM station at the site, but the amazing noisy tower stood thru the tornado. Since then, they have replaced all four towers on this DA, but it took them years to get around to it! MessageType: Suggestion CommentsI just reviewed the frequency distribution map you had made for 92.7FM that I applied for in Richmond Va. It just occurred to me that often if a station that is short spaced is agreeable to co-location on their tower ... that is accepted by the FCC !! So I was wondering if your software would tell you if my application for 92.7 under the NEW RULES would be OK IF WCDX were NOT in the calculations!!???!! Please let me know how much this analysis would cost! And if it works for us, maybe this is a way out for many urban LPFMs. Find sympathetic mom&pop radio stations that see that LPFM provides content to pull people back away from Internet and Satellite competition. Sincerely, Christopher Maxwell Radio Free Richmond MessageType: Suggestion CommentsThe tower site is really scary stuff. Can you say what station this is? MessageType: Praise CommentsThanks for the great pictures. I spent over 20 years in the broadcast industry and got out about 7 years ago and went into cellular mostly beacause of many of the reasons you cited. One thing always made me wonder....why was everybody but the engineer paid so well ???, driving traded out vehicles ???, got all the Holidays off ??? etc etc etc. I am glade I left when I did, I took a wealth of experience and satisfaction knowing I did a good job despite all the obsticles. Thanks again Neil MessageType: Problem Commentsoutstanding pics/story on AM910. the pics display about 2 inches too low and overlay the text makes tuff to read. CommentsKeith, Don't know if you've tried to get a hold of me in the last few days, but I'm sending this via your site to let you know I'm temporarily without email service. New job doesn't start for almost two weeks, so I'm sort of powerless to get the campus IT folks to remedy it. Scott Todd
CommentsI have been trying all week to figure out what is going on regarding the FCC's auctioning of FM broadcast licenses. Search tools and organization of FCC's site are atrocious. I was lucky to find your site through Yahoo, and through you links to some of the FCC information that I seek. Thanks a lot. Too bad that I probably will never have need for your company's services or products.
Commentswhere have you been i have been trying to get ahold of you for a few days. chat with me when you can. Jody

CommentsHi! Just discovered your site while searching for info on LPFM. I am stymied by trying to get it from the FCC... Am I "commercial" if all of the programming and promotion is originated 'in-house'? That is to say, I own an entertainment complex, I would like to create an in-house broadcast facility, all of the promotion and 'advertising' is closed loop, or of the shows, shops, people and things within my facility. With no outside moneys or advertising involved, and covering only the facility area (approx. 125 sq.acres), can I qualify as a non-profit LPFM? Thanks; I have added your page to my Favorites file! CommentsHaving been playing with ham radio form many years, it was great to see what the comerical guys have to do. Also give me insight to what i should be doing better for my self. The tour of the 5,000,000 tv station was great, but the bit on tower maintenance hit home. Great site!
CommentsHello, Can you tell me where to find more information about FM radiating coaxial cable stations. I want to start a station at a mall. I want to broadcast in the parking ramps. This mall has alot of traffic. Can you help me out? Lynn Bell
CommentsPlease help people throughout northern California on the issue of Domestic Violence. This is a problem too often ignored. The month of October is "National Domestic Violence Awareness Month." Please use this month during your broadcasts to remind society of this problem. They're are plenty suitable songs on Cat Country 103 to play after each reminder. People misunderstand domestic violence. They ask why does the victim stay? People are not educated to the exact situation the victim is in.I want society to know it's time to get educated. With these broadcasts maybe a victim will rech the courage to start a new independent life. This would be a life saved. If children are involved it's a family saved. We need people to listen so the abusers will get the message that their behaivior is not ok and Americans will not tolerate it. Please help save lives. Save the children. This is a deadly issue that should not go ignored any longer. Freedom for the victims!!!! Thankyou for listening. Carol Faithful listener to Cat Country 103. A survivor |
